There are different options available when you want to insulate the garage, but the insulation depends on whether the space has drywall or the ceiling and walls are completely exposed. Some of the most common type of insulations are cellulose, injection foam, fiberglass and spray foam. Regardless, you need to choose the best type of insulation for your garage.

Insulating Your Garage

Insulating your garage is important to keep your home cool from the outside temperatures, keep your home comfortable and more.

Reasons for Insulating the Garage

There are many reasons why you must insulate the garage. Here are some of the reasons behind it:

  1. If your wood or metal garage is attached to your house, then it will allow the outside air to get into your house through the common walls you share. Hence, insulating the garage is important to keep your house unaffected because of the outside temperature. This issue worsens if your garage door is dented.
  2. If you have a bonus room above your garage and it cannot maintain a constant temperature, then it will become quite uncomfortable. Hence, you will need to insulate the garage in order to keep it comfortable.
  3. Is the smell or odor from the garage getting into your house? If yes, then you need to immediately work on that.
  4. Do you want your garage to be a more comfortable area? Then insulation is important. It will help you to maintain a regular temperature throughout your garage.

Different Types of Insulation

Cellulose Insulation: Cellulose insulation can be easily blown into the walls and ceiling cavity of the garage. This is a popular type of insulation, but it will work only if your walls and the ceiling cavities are covered with the drywall. The cellulose is mainly blown into the cavity through the holes drilled into that drywall. Later on, these are covered back again. In case your walls are exposed, then you must use wet-applied cellulose as the blown-in will not work in this case. Wet applied cellulose is usually mixed with another bonding agent and then it is sprayed into the cavity of your walls.

Spray and Injection foam: Injection foam is quite similar to that of the spray foam. Both of these are foam based products but are applied in different ways. Whereas spray foam insulation would be applied to all the open cavities in your ceiling and on your wall for creating an air seal, the injection foal is installed to the enclosed cavities by drilling holes in the drywall by injecting foam.

Fiberglass Insulation: Fiberglass insulation can be applied and installed in your garage in the exposed ceiling as well as in the exposed cavities. Fiberglass is one of the inexpensive options that you will be able to install on your own. But you have to take some safety precautions if you are handling the materials. This is dangerous as small fibers of the fiberglass can get embedded in your skin or you can also inhale it.

Bottom Line

So, insulating your garage is quite important for you for keeping your house protected from the outer environment. Also, this will help you to reduce your energy bill that can save a lot of money for you. Insulating is quite important to keep your garage safe too from the harsh climatic elements. Before insulating your garage, be sure to clean it thoroughly regardless of what kind of garage door you have.
